Taurus CT G2 semi-automatic carbine is designed for civilian and security use. This line of weapons, which includes three basic versions in three most popular pistol calibers (9mm Luger, .40SW and .45ACP) is based on the new Taurus MT G2 line of submachine guns, with several features changed to better suit firearms laws, especially US ones.

Taurus CT G2 semi-automatic carbine is built using simple blowback action and fires from closed bolt. Upper receiver is an extruded aluminum unit, while lower receiver is made from polymer with steel reinforcements where necessary. Weapon is fitted with ambidextrous safety levers. Bolt catch is provided to hold the bolt open once the magazine is empty. Feed is from proprietary double stack box magazines, holding 10 rounds of ammunition in every caliber. Furniture includes 'thumb-hole' type shoulder stock which is integral with the pistol grip and is made from polymer. Top of upper receiver is provided with integral Picatinny rail, and CT G2 carbines could be fitted with adjustable iron sights. Additional mounting points for more Picatinny rails are provided on the sides and on the bottom of the polymer forend.

The Taurus MT G2 line of submachine guns first appeared in early 2011, apparently to replace older Taurus MT submachine guns in same calibers. These weapons represent 2^nd generation of Taurus submachine guns, hence the apparent G2 addition to the name. Compared to 1^st generation weapons, new Taurus MT G2 submachine guns offer more noticeably lower and controllable rate of fire, better ergonomics and probably more economical production, thanks to use of more modern manufacturing techniques. It is yet to be seen if these weapons will be adopted by any major force, though. Taurus also offers a semi-automatic version of the G2 line, known as CT G2, which is intended primarily to civilian and security markets.

 

The Taurus MT9 G2 and MT40 G2 sub-machine guns differ only in caliber. Both weapons are built using simple blowback action and firing from closed bolt for enhanced accuracy. Upper receiver is an extruded aluminum unit, while lower receiver is made from polymer with steel reinforcements where necessary. Weapon is fitted with ambidextrous safety / fire mode selectors which allow for semi-automatic fire, 2-round burst mode and full-automatic fire. Bolt catch is provided to hold the bolt open once the magazine is empty. Feed is from proprietary double stack box magazines, holding 34 rounds of 9mm ammunition of 30 or 15 rounds of .40SW ammunition. Furniture includes AR-15 type pistol grip and side-folding buttstock, made of plastic and adjustable for length of pull. Top of upper receiver is provided with integral Picatinny rail, and the MT G2 submachine guns are normally fitted with iron sights; rear sight has two range settings, for 25 and 50 meters. Additional mounting points for more Picatinny rails are provided on the sides and on the bottom of the polymer forend.

During the 1990s Taurus replaced in production its MT-12A submachine gun (licensed copy of the Beretta PM-12) with another foreign design, this time purchased from Chile. Originally known as the FAMAE SAF, in Brazil it is made in a slightly modified form as the Taurus MT-9 (in 9mm Luger) and MT-40 (in .40SW, especially for the Brazilian police forces that favour this caliber). In this case, the MT index stands for Metralhadora Taurus – Taurus Submachine gun, and the digits denote a caliber. Taurus also makes an interesting offshoot of the MT-40, the CT-40 semi-automatic carbine, which is also intended for police and security use but is restricted to semi-automatic fire and has somewhat longer barrel.

 

The Taurus MT-9 and MT-40 sub-machine guns differ only in caliber. The MT-9 is based on the receiver and trigger group of the 5.56mm SG-540 assault rifle, made in Chile by FAMAE under license from the Swiss SIG company. The basic rifle receiver is shortened in the magazine area to accommodate the more compact pistol caliber rounds, and the gas operated action is replaced by a simple unlocked bolt (blowback action). The rifle trigger group with an internal hammer and three modes of fire (single shots, 3-round bursts or full-automatic) is retained, and the gun is fired from a closed bolt. A bolt hold-open device is provided, with a bolt release button located on the left side of the receiver, above the magazine catch. Fire mode selector levers are located on both sides of the receiver and also work as manual safeties. The receiver itself is made from two halves, upper and lower, both manufactured from stamped steel and connected at the front by a hinge. the pistol grip and forend are made from polymer. The gun is equipped with a side-folding skeletonized butstock. Standard sights include a protected front post and a combination drum-type rear, which has a V-type notch for 50 meters range and apertures for 100 and 150 meters.

The URU submachine gun was designed in Brazil by Olympio Vieira de Mello in 1974-75. The production of the new submachine gun was commenced at the company Mekanika Indústria e Comércio Ltda, Rio de Janeiro, in 1977. Total production of the URU submachine guns for Brazilian military and police between 1977 and 1985 is estimated at about 10 thousands guns. 

The Mekanika URU submachine gun is a simple blowback weapon which fires from open bolt. It is capable of semi- and full-automatic fire, and combination safety / fire mode selector lever is located on the left side of the trigger unit. The receiver and barrel jacket are made from steel tube, the trigger housing and magazine well / forward grip are made from steel stampings. Gun is equipped with side-folding metallic buttstock. Sights are fixed, comprising of rear aperture and front post, factory zeroed for 50 meters range.

These pistols were available in a variety of "major" calibers, and in a number of finish options. early pistols were Double Action Only but recently Taurus also introduced a conventional Double / Single action 24/7 pistols.

Taurus 24/7 pistols are short recoil operated, locked breech pistols that use modified Browning-type locking, with single lug on the barrel engaging the ejection port in the slide. Frames of Taurus 24/7 pistols are made from impact-resistant polymer; slides can be made from carbon or stainless steel. Trigger is either double / single action or  double action only, striker-fired, with internal firing pin block safety and manual safety, located on the left side of the frame. Magazines are double stack. Sights are fixed. front part of the frame, below the barrel, is shaped to form an integral Picatinny-type accessory rail.

How to disassemble (field strip) Taurus 24/7 pistols: 1) remove the magazine by pressing the magazine release button; 2) check that the chamber is empty; 3) pull the slide all the way back and lock it open with the slide lock / release lever; 4) rotate the takedown lever (located at the left side of the frame) clockwise until it stops ; 5) carefully pull the take-down lever with its pin out of the frame 6) carefully release the slide stop lever, then push the slide all the way forward and out of the frame; 7) remove the return spring by pushing its head slightly forward and then pulling it out carefully of the detent in the barrel; 7) lift up the barrel from the slide.

Taurus line of "Millennium pro" pistols is a relatively new addition to the extensive product line of this Brazilian gun maker. These pistols are intended as a concealed carry defensive weapons for civilians, as well as backup weapons for police. These pistols are known for good reliability and adequate firepower, especially considering their relatively compact size.

Frames of all "Millennium pro" pistols are made from impact-resistant polymer; slides can be made from carbon or stainless steel, or from titanium. Trigger is double action only, striker-fired, with internal firing pin block safety. Additionally, a somewhat redundant manual safety is provided in the form of the lever, located on the left side of the frame. Magazines are double stack on 9mm and .40SW pistols, and single stack on .45 caliber pistols. Sights are of low profile fixed type, with contrast inserts for better visibility.

The first of the Taurus 900 series pistols, the .40 S&W caliber PT 940 was introduced in 1992 in an attempt to provide both civilian and police shooters with a pistol substantially more compact than their full-size PT 92 / PT 100 series pistols, yet big and powerful enough to be used as primary duty or self-defense weapon. Two years later Taurus introduced a .45 caliber version, which was slightly longer and heavier due to the larger round. A 9mm version, the PT 911, appeared in 1997, and in around 2005 Taurus introduced the newest pistol in its 900 line, the PT 909. The PT 909 is mechanically similar to PT 911 but has a different grip shape (with curved backstrap, like PT 945) and an integral Picatinny-type accessory rail on the frame below the barrel.

Taurus 900 series pistol are short-recoil operated, locked-breech weapons. Frames on all PT 900 series models are machined from forged aluminum blocks, while slides and barrels are made either from carbon or stainless steel. Locking is of modified Browning type, with a tilting barrel that engages the slide with a single locking lug at the top of the chamber area, which enters the ejection window. Unlocking is controlled by the cam-shaped lug below the barrel. The trigger is of the double-action type, with an exposed hammer and ambidextrous safety/decocking levers on the frame. Magazines are double-stack on 9mm and .40 S&W models and single-stack on .45 ACP models. The magazine release button is located at the base of the trigger-guard. The sights on service models are of the fixed type, with both front and rear sight dovetailed into the slide. Pistols are available from the factory with standard or night (with luminous inserts) sights. 

How to disassemble (field strip) Taurus PT911 PT940 and PT945 pistols: 1) remove the magazine by pressing the magazine release button; 2) check that the chamber is empty; 3) depress the takedown lever stop, which is the small button located on the right of the frame above the trigger guard; 4) while holding the button down, rotate the takedown lever (located at the left side of the frame) downward about 90o ; 5) push the slide all the way forward and out of the frame; 6) remove the return spring by pushing its head slightly forward and then pulling it out carefully of the detent in the barrel; 7) lift up the barrel from the slide.

Reassemble in reverse order.

The Taurus pistols are manufactured by Brazilian company Forjas Taurus SA. The original PT92 pistol was exact copy of the original Beretta 92 pistol, and PT92 still carries some of the original Beretta features, such as frame mounted safety, but, since its introduction, Taurus PT92 had been significantly improved, and currently represents affordable pistol of high quality.

Technically, PT92 is a recoil operated, locked brech pistol, that uses shor recoiling barrel with underbarrel locking piece that tilts down to unlock slide from the barrel (Walther P38 / Beretta 92 type locking). The trigger is of Double Action type, with ambidextrous frame mounted manual safety. On models marked AF-D safety also acts as a decocker when pressed all the way down (below the "fire" position). When safety is in "safe" position, it locks the slide and disconnects the trigger and sear. Current PT92 and its derivatives also featured automatic firing pin safety. The frame and slide could be made either from carbon steel with blue finish or from stainless steel wit polished finish. Sights are of fixed type.

Apart from PT92 itself, Taurus makes some derivatives of its basic model:

PT 92 C - compact model, with shortened grip, slide and barrel. Accepts standard PT92 magazines.
PT 99 - similar for PT 92 except that the rear sights are micrometer click ajustable.
PT 100 - similar to PT 92 but chambered for .40SW cartridge
PT 101 - similar to PT 99 (ajustable sights) but chambered for .40SW cartridge
